Just eighty-eight kilometers from the ocean at Durban, Howick is 1050 metres above sea level and lies near the Drakensberg Mountain Range and is located on the N3 freeway, its connection to the rest of South Africa. It is home to the renowned Howick Falls, where the water of the Umgeni River enters a 95 metre free-fall over dolerite cliffs en route to the Indian Ocean.
The outskirts of the town housed a concentration camp during the Anglo Boer War between 1899 and 1902. A monument to the women and children who perished in the camp has been erected.
Howick and nearby Karkloof boast a little-known and quirky claim to being the possible location of the first manned flight when John Goodman Howsman flew his self-made glider in 1871 and 1875 on the outskirts of Howick, close to Karkloof. Distance flown and altitude achieved varies from accounts but what is accepted is that they were longer and higher than that of the Wright Brothers and Lilienthal. This achievement is marked with a memorial to Houseman's achievement at Curry's Post just outside Howick.
Nelson Mandela was awarded "The Freedom of Howick" in December 1996. Mr Mandela had been arrested on 5 August 1962 on the road between Durban and Johannesburg near Howick and Lidgetton West. A memorial has been erected and the annual Mandela Day Marathon takes place in Imbali and finsihes at the site of the icon's arrest.
Howick has grown exponentially through the recent establishment of a number of major retirement villages such as Amberfield, Amberglen, Amber Valley, Amber Ridge and Amber Lakes, that flank the Karkloof Falls Road.
Whether you are a retiree or still earning your retirment rights, planning to relocate to this historic town, you may well be seeking a reliable relocation company or furniture mover. assist your move. Howick Moving Company can certainly make your move a lot easier.
